Removable coatings allow coated interior products to be reused several times, which will significantly extend their lifespan and ensure recyclable waste streams at end-of-life. The PEELDESIGN project is investigating and optimising such coatings so that they can be used for interior applications, as part of circular strategies.
Researchers at Sirris demonstrate for first time femtosecond laser texturing of soft biopolymer coatings as a high-throughput method for surface patterning.
Innovation in manufacturing plays a key role in reducing the industry’s environmental impact. Recent advances in non-classical manufacturing technologies, such as ultrashort pulsed laser manufacturing ...
Friction and wear play a major role in modern society. The operation of many mechanical systems, including vehicles, machines and consumer goods directly depends on appropriate friction and wear ...
An innovative, plasmonic paint system uses nanoparticles to create structural colours without the need for multiple pigments. This system, which needs less product and is more colour stable, is also ...
Coated paper-based packaging has an important role to play in the transition to a circular economy. The extent to which these materials can be recycled is a key factor in further increasing their ...
The new project BeFORE - Barrier for recycling - in which Sirris is involved, focuses on recyclable material innovations for ’contact sensitive’ plastic and paper packaging with high quality barrier properties. Its main goal is to improve design for recycling of primary packaging. This by studying the implementation potential of promising flexible packaging materials with alternative barrier materials. The project will focus on the food, pet food and cosmetics industry. Interested in partaking? Join us!
Many components suffer a loss of performance due to ice formation. Various technologies are available to 'armour' surfaces against ice or frost formation. In this area, too, micro- and nanostructures ...
How can an anti-icing coating help combat icing problems? How can it be implemented and how can its effect be simulated in a lab? These are the questions behind the launch of the COOCK project ...
To prevent prostheses from becoming contaminated with bacteria, their surface can be coated with a bacteria-killing microstructure. Moreover, this coarsening improves the adhesion of the bone to the ...
Biomimetics or 'biomimicry' imitates principles found in nature to solve practical problems, such as modifying a surface to add certain properties to it. Thus, surfaces can be made water-repellent ...
