Winterwind 2023, where theory meets practice
Organized by Swedish Windpower Association since 2008, Winterwind is the most important meeting for wind energy in cold climates, to discuss the challenges of generating wind power in cold climates. Winterwind offers seminars, debates, poster exhibition, networking, social events, an Open Innovation Contest, OIC and technical visit. Parallel to the conference there is a fair.
Participants are the world’s wind energy professionals such as scientists, engineers, manufacturers, developers, consultants, investors, wind farm owners, students and O & M providers.
Sirris too will be present, together with its OWI-Lab partner VUB.
We will give three presentations:
- 'Gearing up for cold climate validation testing of 15+ MW wind turbine drivetrains' (28 March), presented by Sirris
- 'An active/passive coating stack for surface icing mitigation tested under various climatic conditions' (29 March), presented by Sirris
- Proof of concept of using an existing foundation structural health monitoring system to detect icing (29 March), presented by VUB
You can find the full (preliminary) programme here.

Sirris has test infrastructure (our large climatic test chamber) at its disposal and is active in ongoing R&D projects dealing with the development and asset management of wind turbines in harsh environments. Cold and icy locations are one of the research topics of the COOCK research project Fighting Icing and the EU project Newskin.
