How to grow a future-proof battery storage industry

Strategies for building resilient, sustainable, and efficient local battery supply chains.

As Europe accelerates its transition to a carbon-free economy, the need to rebuild fossil-based systems into sustainable alternatives is urgent. Batteries, and the materials they require, are the new oil, central to cleaning up transportation and expanding renewable energy networks. This workshop delves into the opportunities and challenges of localizing the battery value chain in Europe.

Context

Two years ago, the EU announced measures in response to the US Inflation Reduction Act. Now, the EU Clean Industrial Deal is on the brink of launch, aiming to localize production, enhance control, and meet environmental standards. By leveraging Europe’s renewable energy capacity, localized battery manufacturing can create shorter, more reliable supply chains and lower transportation emissions.
Belgian companies; startups, SMEs, and corporates are at the forefront of this sector. Their focus lies in improving efficiency, reducing process steps, and employing cleaner (chemical and hydrometallurgical) methods.
