Unveiling LCA Insights on Bio-Based Coatings and Additives
In the quest for sustainable development, the coatings and paints industry has faced mounting pressure to minimize its environmental footprint. The traditional protective coatings, reliant on petrochemical-based resources, contribute significantly to environmental pollution and resource depletion. This calls for a shift towards integration of components derived from native or residual biomass, which promise reduced ecological impact. While most emphasis is put on the selection of bio-based binders, the use of bio-based additives plays a crucial role in enhancing eco-friendliness of bio-based coatings. As the selection of functional bio-based additives is not merely a matter of replacing petrochemical components with bio-based alternatives, it requires a comprehensive understanding of their life cycle impacts to ensure true environmental benefits. The implementation of life-cycle analysis in the selection of eco-friendly binders and additives represents a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices. By providing a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impacts associated with additives, it empowers manufacturers to make informed decisions that align with sustainability objectives.

14:00 - 14:05 | Introduction on AddBio project | |
14:05 - 14:30 | Industrial Sustainability and Sustainability Assessment Environmental damages and regulatory pressures drive industries to adopt more sustainable practices and products. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of industrial sustainability and its operationalization in companies. We will also show how the sustainability of processes and products can be measured and managed. | Rene Reich (KULeuven) René Reich is a researcher in Prof. Karel Van Acker’s team on Sustainability Assessments of Materials and Circular Economy at the KU Leuven. His research focuses on the digitalization of organizations in the circular economy. |
14:30 - 15:00 | Sustainable journey for the coatings industry Climate change is now a fact. Industrials need to act and meet the Green Deal objectives. Raw materials being one of the main contributors to Green House Gases emissions, the chemical sector is actively looking for sustainable solutions. An illustrative case with the coatings industry will be presented showing how sustainability could be integrated and how biobased binders and additives are part of the solution to accelerate ecological transition. | Sophia Rhazali (Ecoat) Sophia Rhazali is a Chemical Engineer graduated from the Materials, Food and Chemistry National School of Bordeaux in 2014. She worked during 6 years in R&D department of several companies in Home Care, Personal Care and Animal Health applications dealing with technical support and product development. She joined Ecoat in 2021 and is now Customer Sustainability Manager. She has developed a service offer to support customers in their ecological transition through LCA and formulation. She is also deeply involved in developing expertise in LCA of biobased product. |
The webinar is presented in context of the VLAIO-COOCK AddBio project.
