Worldline uses eco-design as a lever to cost efficiency

Wordline, the European market leader in payment and transaction services, and a leading manufacturer of payment terminals, has taken measures to reduce its environmental impact by revising its processes and products.


The Terminals entity designs, sells and manages payment terminals for the international market, primarily for the premium segment. The terminals offer a wide range of functionalities and options; the product design process therefore requires in-depth interdisciplinary technological knowledge and cooperation. The challenge is to combine mechanical and electronic components, as well as data capture, transmission and security functionalities, into one compact, aesthetic and user-friendly device. In addition, the devices must have a long service life and be easy to update.


The company worked with Sirris and Agoria to reduce both the cost and the environmental impact and implemented a process of continuous improvement to this end. Sirris, Agoria and Worldline made a joint effort, e.g. in workshops, to get this improvement process up and running. The introductory workshop, which studied the potential benefits of the circular economy and eco-design, was well-received and resulted in the fact that the company selected a number of themes and ideas to explore in greater depth in individual and collective work sessions.


From now on Worldline will be able to measure and monitor the ecological impact of products, along with their economic impact, from design over production and marketing. All needs are now included in the design process, based on the initial product ideas. The choices made by production sites and modes of transport have enormous economic and environmental consequences, as the multi-stage production processes involve sites in Europe and Asia, international markets and a distributed supply chain. By simultaneously measuring the ecological and economic impact of products, they can analyse different scenarios and optimise the supply chain in terms of costs and environmental impact.

Casing and packaging

The housing of a product largely contributes to its overall weight and eco-impact; therefore measures should be taken to find alternative solutions for the current plastic casings. Worldline is working more closely together with suppliers and subcontractors to investigate and evaluate new materials. Early feedback about tests with a multidisciplinary product design team provides significant added value and makes it possible to identify needs, expectations and new opportunities, which will trigger an evolutionary material selection process.


To restrict the use of unnecessary packaging, Worldline studied the underlying needs in different process phases, evaluated basic needs, questioned long-standing habits. This helped them to identify new concepts and reduce unnecessary packaging aimed at a better streamlined logistic process.


Continuous improvements, which also take into account the environmental impact, is now an integral part of Worldline's management system. New challenges will, however, always be right around the corner.
