The draft ISO/ASTM DIS 52950 'Additive manufacturing - General principles - Overview of data processing' has changed from status DIS ('Draft International Standard'- draft for enquiry, subject to public input) to FDIS ('Final Draft International Standard' - draft for final approval vote).

The purpose of this draft is to improve communication between customer and supplier in respect to data exchange for additive manufacturing.

The document enables to understand and specify a suitable file format for data exchange in relation to the existing developments of 3D geometries for AM. Data processing might be of interest to producers and users of AM systems, AM software, CAD/CAE modelling, reverse engineering and test bodies for geometrical quality control.

The document addresses the following on data exchange :

  • dataflow (3D cad modelling, 3D digitalisation, surface reconstruction, polygonization/triangulation, facet model and slicing process)
  • data formats (STL, VRML, IGES, STEP, AMF, OBJ and 3MF)
  • data preparation (data quality, export parameters and considerations in data processing)
