Omar Mohout’s picture of the current tech start-up world

Now that banks and government have become aware of the potential of Belgian start-ups and are also proceeding to take action, it is now really clear that a true start-up ecosystem is under way. Omar Mohout, an expert in the IT department of Sirris, includes his views on the current state of affairs, in an article from the March edition of the financial-economic magazine Trends.

Belgian start-ups together raised 6 million euro in capital in 2014. An amount that didn’t escape the notice of either the government nor (large) banks and about which reaction was therefore inevitable. The banks through entering one by one into the world of crowdfunding, accelerators, incubators and other forms of investment funds. According to Omar Mohout, this step by the banks is a good thing for the start-up ecosystem.

Change is also coming on the political level: the Cabinet of Minister of Digital Agenda, De Croo, identified the Belgian companies and proposed a first version of a digital agenda for the 2015 Tech Start-up Day, in order to meet the aspirations of the sector.
